Pride Northwest and Portland Black Pride are very excited to partner in participating in the Bayard Rustin 2013 Commemoration Project!
To honor Rustin's courage and his invaluable legacy, the National Black Justice Coalition has launched the Bayard Rustin 2013 Commemoration Project. All across the country throughout 2013 organizations and community members are honoring Bayard Rustin's legacy with various events.
Pride Northwest and Portland Black Pride are partnering for a special screening of "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin" with special guest Walter Naegle, Rustin's partner and executor of his estate.
The Film:
"BROTHER OUTSIDER takes a multifaceted approach to the material, reflecting the complexity of Rustin’s story. This feature-length portrait unfolds both chronologically and thematically, using interviews and traditional documentary techniques, as well as experimental approaches. The work of Marlon Riggs and the pastiche quality of his groundbreaking documentaries have inspired the production team. The historical aspects of the piece are based on meticulous primary research in the Rustin papers and other archives, and will incorporate elements such as archival footage, stills, posters and broadsheets, government propaganda films, paintings, and other cultural artifacts."
More information about the production can be found at http://rustin.org/?page_id=3
Pride Northwest is honored to present this special event with Portland Black Pride, as part of our Official Pride Week Celebration. Tickets are a low $5, which will go to help cover the cost of the event and to support Pride Northwest and Portland Black Pride.
"...most people do not know that Bayard Rustin, an out Black gay man, was the key organizer for the March on Washington. America needs to know that Bayard existed. Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and same-gender-loving people need to know that Rustin stood firm in his identity and, by his very presence, challenged others in the Civil Rights Movement to overcome homophobia, " says Mandy Carter, Commemoration Project National Coordinator.
The screening will be held in the Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom (Third Floor).
Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased at:
