Cory Mcabee’s underground classic The American Astronaut is an outstanding dose of wacky, raunchy surrealism. In a film culture obsessed with high-budget sophistication, McAbee is the antithesis to such mentality, providing inspiration to anyone working within constraints. This past October, we proudly welcomed Cory to PSU for a lecture on DIY crowdsourcing techniques and collaboration. We are stoked to finally feature his beyond-spirited film, a rock musical set in a dusty Western iteration of the solar system. The American Astronaut follows interplanetary tradesman Sam Curtis as he delivers a fresh piece of meat to the women of Venus with a violent, spurned birthday-boy on his trail. Do not miss this strange B&W film in gorgeous 35mm.
